Lt Col H H Merriman DSO MC TD
Commanded 5th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment on its re-formation in 1947.
Hugh Humphrey Merriman was commissioned in 5th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment in the early 1930s and on the doubling of the Territorial Army in 1939 joined the l/5th Battalion. He served with that Battalion in France in 1940 and for his action as Carrier Platoon Commander was awarded the Military Cross.
Later he transferred to The Reconnaissance Corps and commanded the 3rd Recce Regiment in North West Europe in 1944 and 1945 and was awarded the DSO for his inspired leadership.
In 1947 he was appointed to raise and command a re-formed 5th Battalion but shortly afterwards had to resign owing to ill-health.
He died on 28th September 1983.
