Lt Col D J AIlfreeCommanded 10th Bn The East Surrey Regiment from July 1940 to April 1941. He later commanded the 12th Holding Battalion from November 1944 to May 1946
Denys Julian AIlfree was born on 19th February 1897 and was commissioned in The East Surrey Regiment on 16th June 1915. He was seconded to the Machine Gun Corps during the 1914-18 War. In 1919 he embarked with 1st Bn The East Surrey Regiment for North Russia. Between the wars he served with the 1st Battalion in Egypt, the Sudan and India and with the 2nd Battalion and The Regimental Depot in UK. From 1937 to 1939 he was an instructor at the Small Arms School in India. In July 1940 he was appointed to command the 10th Battalion with whom he served until April 1941. From 1944 to 1946 he commanded the 12th Holding Battalion and retired from the Army on 13th February 1946.

He died on 15th August 1981 at the age of 84.
