Lt Col J H Mason DSO TD

Lt Col J H MasonCommanded 1/6th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from June 1944 to December 1945 and 6th (Bermondsey) Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment (TA) from May 1947 to April 1950.

John Harradine Mason was educated at Marlborough College and commissioned in 1/6th Bn The Queen’s Royal Regiment in June 1939 and served with that Battalion in France, Belgium, North Africa, Italy and NW Europe. He commanded the Battalion from 26th June 1944 when Lt Col M Forrester was wounded until December 1945. He was twice wounded and was awarded the DSO for his fine leadership of the Battalion.

In 1947, when the Territorial Army was re-formed he was appointed to command and raise the 6th Battalion.

Having completed his tour he retired in 1950.

He was a keen athlete and was the Hertfordshire County Champion 120 yards Hurdles and High Jump from 1937 to 1939 and the Territorial Army Champion 120 yards Hurdles in 1939.

He died on 30th July 1982.
