Record of Bandmasters & Drum Majors

Whilst the record for the regular battalion Bandmasters is accurate the names of all Bandmasters of both regiments Territorial bands is incomplete. The same applies to those who were appointed Sergeant Drummer, or Drum Major. Accordingly, as many names have been researched are included below, with any known battalion or personal history. They are NOT in date order. Where it is known, the battalion has been shown in brackets.

The Queen's (Drum Majors)

Sgt/Dmr A Lloyd (2nd) 1896, DIM Warren (1st), DIM 'Pedlar' Palmer (2nd), DIM 'Googly' Loveland (2nd), Sgt. J Kingsland was Band Sergeant of 1 Queen's but acted as Drum Major for a period in the late forties, DIM Biggs, DIM Wallis, DIM J 'Jock' Henderson (2nd), Henderson was appointed RSM of 1 Buffs during the war and was awarded the MM for gallantry, whilst serving with them. He went into the Royal Hospital and died in 1998. DIM Lowler, DIM Wilson (1st), DIM Sales, DIM 'Gary' Lockwood (2nd) became RSM of 2/7th Queen's and was awarded the DCM. His son Eric Lockwood became Drum Major of 1 Queen's Surreys and 1 Queen's, D/M F Harman (2nd and 1st), D/M Westrop (1st), D/M Newbold, D/M J Stiles (1st), DIM B Morris, last Drum Major of Queen's Royal Regiment 1959, and then 1 Queen's Surreys, D/M Gates, D/M Hall (4th), who transferred to 7th Queen's, D/M M D Maloney (1 Queen's), D/M C Smith (1 Queen's), D/M S Barden (1 Queen's), he was the last Drum Major of 1 Queen's on disbandment in Minden 1992.

The Surrey's (Drum Majors)

Sgt/Dmr A Yates (1st) 1904, D/M W Wernham (1st), D/M C Smith (1st), D/M J Craggs, DCM (1st) awarded an immediate award of the DCM for his gallantry at the Battle of Kampar whilst serving with the British Battalion, D/M Davis, who came from The Scots Guards (1st), D/M P B A Howells (1st) who was the last Drum Major of 1 Surreys, D/M J Gilbody (2nd), D/M E Croot (2nd), D/M Bennett (6th), D/M M Stuart-William MBE (6 Surreys and 4th Queen's Surreys), D/M H Barker (4 Queen's Surreys), D/M E Bartripp (1st) D/M McGarracher (2nd), D/M D Seal (2nd), D/M J Plummer (7 Surreys and 23 London), Sgt/Dmr F French (1st), Sgt/Dmr A Drummer (2nd), Sgt/Dmr Smythe, Sgt/Dmr Smith, Sgt/Dmr Morris, D/M Craig, D/M W Burrell (1st), D/M W J Jenkins, D/M Mackleworth (1st).

Mr L Woolaston, was Band Sergeant of 1 Surreys in 1951 and was the first member of the Band to go to Kneller Hall for 21 years. He was appointed Bandmaster of the 4 Uganda Battalion, The King's African Rifles.
