Norman Baldwin Brading was born on 25th May 1896 and was educated at the RMC Sandhurst. He was commissioned in The East Surrey Regiment in May 1916 and served in France and Belgium from August 1916 to October 1917 and was wounded. He was attached to The Royal Sussex Regiment from November 1917 to December 1918. From December 1918 to April 1920 he was a Staff Captain at Eastern Command. In 1920 he was posted from the 1st to the 2nd Battalion and served with that Battalion in England. In 1923 and 1924 he was seconded to the Royal West African Frontier Force and then rejoined the 2nd Battalion. In 1929 he joined the 1st Battalion in India and from 1932 to 1937 held staff appointments with the Auxiliary Forces, India. In 1939 he was posted to the Depot. In July 1940 he was appointed to command the 2/6th Battalion. In September 1942 he was appointed GSO I Home Forces. From April 1943 to December 1945 he commanded a Sub Area.
He was made a CBE in February 1945, Mentioned in Despatches in April 1946 and made a Knight Commander of the Order of Orange Nassau with Swords in January 1947. He retired from the Army on 21st March 1949. Later he was made a CMG.
He died on 5th June 1990 aged 94.
