Between the Chinese war of 1860 and 1963, battalions of The Queen's Royal Regiment, the East Surrey Regiment and, after the amalgamation, the Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment spent substantial periods in both mainland China and at Hong Kong. Duties ranged from the enforcement of the provisions of international treaties with China and guarding British and international enclaves on the mainland, to the garrisoning of the British Colony of Hong Kong.
