Commanding Officer - The East Surrey Regiment
Commanded 1st Bn The East Surrey Regiment from November 1958 to October 1959 and after amalgamation with 1st Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment he commanded 1st Bn The Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment from October 1959 to November 1960.
Gilbert Anthony White was born on 10th June 1916 and was educated at Christ's Hospital and joined a firm of Lloyds Brokers in the City. He enrolled in the Artists' Rifles and in 1939 was commissioned in 6th Bn The East Surrey Regiment and posted to the 1/6th Battalion.
He served with that Battalion in France in 1940 and was adjutant. After attending the Staff College he became Brigade Major of 10th Infantry Brigade in Italy: The 1/6th Battalion was in that Brigade. In 1946 he was granted a Regular Army Commission in The East Surrey Regiment. In addition to regimental duties he served in New York with the United Nations.
In November 1958 he was appointed to command the 1st Battalion and after amalgamation with 1st Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment in 0ctober 1959 he commanded 1st Bn The Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment until November 1960.
From 1960 to 1962 he was a member of the personal staff of Lord Mountbatten after which he was appointed to command the 56th Infantry Brigade (TA).
In 1965 he attended the Imperial Defence College and then was posted to HQ BAOR as BGS. In 1969 he was promoted to Major General to command the JSLO in Bonn and retired from the Army in 1971.
He was Mentioned in Despatches in 1945 and made a MBE in the same year.
He died 27th August 2003
