Westminster Abbey Memorial Plaque
Lt Gen Sir Adolphus Oughton KCB, Colonel The 31st Regiment
The monument which is in the form of a plaque fixed to a pillar is just inside the North Ambulatory Gate and is just to the right of the Wolfe Memorial. The plaque consists of a square tablet surmounted by a Grecian urn, on which is carried the bust of Sir Adolphus Oughton.
The inscription reads:-
“Sacred to the memory of Sir James Adolphus Oughton, Lieutenant-General, Commander-in-Chief of His Majesty’s forces in North Britain, Colonel of XXXI Regiment of Foot, Lieutenant-General of the Island of Antigua and Knight of the Most Honourable Order of Bath. Departed this life the XIV day of April MDCCLXXX in the LXI year of his age.” |
