Sergeant WHM Osborn DCM & Bar, Military Medal & Bar

Sergeant Osborn was a member of the 8^th Battalion, The East Surrey Regiment, which served in the 1914-18 War, this Battalion was one of the hardest-fought units of the Regiment, and had a magnificent record from the time of its entry into the France and Flanders theatre of operations in July 1915 until disbandment four years later. The 8^th Surreys were brigaded with the 7^th Queen's, and fought side by side with them on many occasions.

Osborn first made his mark during the battle for Montauban Ridge in July 1916 when, coming across an abandoned German machine-gun, he was able to use it to good effect against its former owners. In April 1917, after the action at Cherisy, L/Cpl Osborn was awarded the Military Medal and Mentioned in Despatches. During that summer Osborn was promoted Corporal, and for his brave conduct during the confused fighting at Poelcapelle in October, he was awarded a Bar to his Military Medal. Osborn's final award for gallantry was the notification in the 1918 New Year's Honours List that His Majesty the King had been graciously pleased to approve the award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal to Sgt. Osborn for his distinguished service in the field.

He died on the 16^th May 1962.
