Commanded 1st Bn The East Surrey Regiment from November 1953 to May 1956.
John Randal Armstrong-MacDonnell was born on 11th December 1911 and was educated at the Nautical College, Pangbourne and the RMC Sandhurst. He was commissioned in The East Surrey Regiment in August 1931 and served with the 2nd Battalion in UK from 1931 to 1933 when he was posted to the 1st Battalion in India.
He served with that Battalion in Lahore, Fyzabad and Waziristan. In 1936 he was appointed Field Treasure Chest Officer and rejoined the 1st Battalion for the move to Khartoum. In 1938 he was adjutant of the Depot and in 1940 was posted to the 2/6th Battalion with whom he served in France and was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry.
At the fall of France he became a prisoner of war. 1946 he attended the Staff College, Camberley and was posted to the Military Secretary's Department, Egypt. In 1948 (he was appointed D A A ( East Africa Command and in 1949 joined 1st Bn The Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment at Shorncliffe. In 1951 he became GSO I Infantry Directorate at the War Office and commanded 1st Bn The East Surrey Regiment from November 1953 to May 1956.
He retired from the Army on 29th December 1957
He died on October 21st 2000
