Colonel C E Thompson DSO MC
Commanded 24th London Regiment (The Queen's) from 18th February 1924 to 18th February 1928.
Claude Ernest Thompson was born on 8th 'December 1880. He was educated at Brentwood School, Essex. In 1899 he enlisted in 20th Corps Middlesex Rifle Volunteers (Artists), Rifle Brigade. He served in the South African War in The Imperial Yeomanry as trooper and sergeant and received The Queen's Medal with five clasps.
In 1911 he re-joined 28th (County of London) Bn The London Regiment (Artists' Rifles), and became a Colour Sergeant. On 27th January 1915 he was commissioned and served with 2nd Bn The Prince of Wales's Volunteers (South Lancashire Regiment).
In 1916 he was appointed adjutant and in June 1916 was awarded the Military Cross. He later was appointed Brigade Major. In July 1917 he was awarded a Bar to the Military Cross and in January 1918 he was awarded the DSO.
From June 1918 to the end of the war he commanded the 1/5th Battalion of his Regiment. He was wounded twice and Mentioned in Despatches four times.
On 18th February 1924 he was appointed to command 24th London Regiment (The Queen's) and on completion of his tour of command on 18th February 1928 was promoted Brevet Colonel.
