Colonel W Parker DSO TD DL
Commanded 24th London Regiment (The Queen's) from 18th February 1920 to 18th February 1924.
William Parker was born in 1880 and was educated at the City of London School. He joined 4th Vol Bn The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) in 1898 and was commissioned in the Battalion which later was re-named 24th London Regiment (The Queen's). He served with the 1/24th Battalion during the 1914-18 War and commanded it in 1916. Later he commanded 1/18th Battalion (London Irish) and ,1/20th Battalion (Blackheath and Woolwich). He was awarded the DSO for operations in the Ypres Salient in 1916 and was twice Mentioned in Despatches.
He was appointed to command 24th London Regiment on its re-formation in February 1920.
He retired on 18th February 1924 and was promoted Brevet Colonel.
He was a member of the County of London Territorial Army and Air Force Association from 1920 to 1947 and in 1934 was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of London.
In civilian life he was called to the Bar in 1901 by the Middle Temple but did not practise. He became a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Secretary of which Institute he was President in 1929-30.
He died on 13th July 1947.
