Colonel W S Cave DSO TD
Commanded 5th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from February 1933 to July 1937.
William Sturmy Cave was born on 14th July 1897 and was educated at Haileybury which he left in July 1914 to join 4th Bn The Hampshire Regiment. During the 1914-18 War he served in India, Palestine and France and was awarded the DSO in 1918 and was Mentioned in Despatches. He was demobilised in 1919 and took up engineering.
In 1924 he joined 5th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment as a Company Commander and commanded the Battalion from February 1933 to July 1937. In 1938 he joined the Air Ministry as an Assistant Director and in 1939 was appointed Deputy Director. In 1940 he was appointed to the Staff of the British Purchasing Commission in New York and later in Washington he represented British interests in aircraft production. For his services he was awarded the Legion of Merit (USA).
He was a keen sportsman and athlete. In later, years his main relaxation was skiing. He was a former President of the Ski Club of Great Britain.
He died on 25th December 1953.
