Brigadier G V Palmer CBE TD
Commanded 5th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from July 1937 to September 1939 and the l/5th Battalion from September 1939 to August 1941.
Godfrey Vaughan Palmer was educated at the RMC Sandhurst and commissioned in The Queen's Royal Regiment in 1918. He served with the 1st Battalion and the Depot until 1928 when he resigned from the Regular Army and took a job in the City. The day after resigning he joined the 5th Battalion which he commanded from July 1937 to September 1939 when the Territorial Army was doubled. He then was appointed to command the l/5th Battalion with whom he served in France in 1940. He was wounded and Mentioned in Despatches.
In August 1941 he was promoted to command the Chatham Garrison and in 1943 was made an OBE for his services. From 1943 to 1944 he commanded No 6 Base Sub Area in Sicily and Italy and was twice more Mentioned in Despatches.
From 1944 to 1945 he was Brigadier General Staff, Supply and Relief Area/Greece and BGS Military Mission in Vienna and Commander of British Troops and Military Government in 1945. In 1946 he was made a CBE. He was also awarded the American Legion of Merit and the silver medal of the Greek Red Cross.
He was a keen rugby player which started at Sandhurst and went via the Harlequins, Richmond, the Army and Combined Services to the England Fifteen. He was capped three times in 1928.
He died on 28th April 1972
