Lt Col H F Warden DSO

Commanded 1^st Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from 23^rd June 1919 to 15^th May 1920.

Hugh Fawcett Warden was born on 10^th March 1871 and was educated at Haileybury and the RMC Sandhurst. He was commissioned in The Queen's Royal Regiment on 29^th October 1890 and posted to the 1^st Battalion. In 1898 he was promoted captain and joined the 2^nd Battalion with whom he served throughout the Boer War. He was wounded twice and twice Mentioned in Despatches.

On return to England he was appointed Superintendent of Gymnasia of Southern Command and held this appointment until rejoining the 2^nd Battalion in 1906. On the 2^nd Battalion being posted to Gibraltar in 1910 he was transferred to the 1^st Battalion. In 1913 he was promoted major and appointed to command the Regimental Depot. At the outbreak of war in 1914 he was appointed to command the 6^th (Service) Battalion and commanded it in France and Belgium until 1917 when he was appointed to command the VI Corps School. Later he returned to England and took command of the 3^rd Battalion. For his services in the 1914-18 War he was awarded the DSO and was twice Mentioned in Despatches.

After demobilization in France, the cadre of the 1^st Battalion joined up with the 3^rd Battalion and from this Lt Col Warden reformed the 1^st Battalion which he commanded until he retired from the Army on 15^th May 1920.

He died on 19^th February 1951.
