Lt Col H C Whinfield

Lt Col H C WhinfieldCommanded 1st Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from 15th May 1920 to 14th May 1924.

Henry Charles Whinfield was born on 18th November 1872. He was educated at Shrewsbury and the RMC Sandhurst. He was commissioned in The Queen's Royal Regiment on 9th January 1892 and was posted to the 2nd Battalion in India.

He served in the South African War, 1899 to 1902 and was wounded. He took part in many operations and received The Queen's Medal with five clasps and The King's Medal with two clasps.

From 1904 to 1908 he was adjutant to a Volunteer and later Territorial Force Battalion and then was appointed an Instructor at the RMA Woolwich from October 1909 to December 1913. He rejoined the 2nd Battalion and served in France where he was wounded in 1914 during the First Battle of Ypres. He was Mentioned in Despatches.

From April 1916 to July 1918 he commanded a Company of Gentlemen Cadets at the RMA Woolwich and from July 1918 to July 1920 was Chief Infantry Instructor. He was appointed to command 1st Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from 15th May 1920 and took up the appointment on 15th July 1920. In his period of command the Battalion was engaged in operations in North and South Ireland during "the troubles". Having completed his tour of command he was placed on the half pay list on 15th May 1924 and retired from the Army on 15th November 1924.

He was a keen sportsman and a good cricketer in his younger days.

He died on 9th May 1962 in South Africa in his 90th year.
