Commanded 1st Bn The East Surrey Regiment from 21st December 1927 to 21st December 1931.
Max James Auguste Jourdier was born on 4th April 1884 and educated at Shewsbury. He was commissioned in The East Surrey Regiment on 10th October 1903 and served with the 2nd Battalion in India and Burma until 1914 when he was appointed adjutant of the 4th Battalion. Early in 1915 he rejoined the 2nd Battalion and was twice wounded in that year. From April 1916 to November 1919 he served on the staff in France, Egypt, Greece and Germany. In October 1916 he was Mentioned in Despatches and in January 1917 was awarded the DSO. In 1920 he attended the Staff College, Camberley. In June 1921 he was appointed DAQMG, Presidency and Assam District, Calcutta. in May 1924 he rejoined the 2nd Battalion with whom he served until January 1927 when he was appointed DAQMG Shanghai Defence Force. He vacated this appointment on being selected to command the 1st Battalion from December 1927. He commanded that Battalion until 21st December 1931, after which he was promoted Colonel and commanded 131st (Surrey) Infantry Brigade (TA) from October 1932 to February 1936. He retired from the Army on 8th February 1936.
He died on 29th November 1961.
He was the father of Major J M Jourdier who commanded the Depot from 1952 to 1954.
