Commanded 10th Bn The East Surrey Regiment from June 1942 to August 1944.
Henry James Sinclair Brooke, known as 'Rajah', was born on 20th February 1910 and was educated at Monkton Combe and the RMC Sandhurst. He was commissioned in The Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment in August 1930 and was posted to the 2nd Battalion in the Channel Islands. Shortly after he joined the 1st Battalion in India. In 1937 he returned to the UK and was posted to the Depot. In 1940 he served with the 1st Battalion in France and later became 2 i/c of that Battalion. He then commanded 4th Division Battle School In June 1942 he was appointed to command 10th Bn The East Surrey Regiment. After that Battalion was disbanded in August 1944 he attended the Staff College and in March 1945 was posted to GHQ Middle East as AAG which appointment he held until April 1948. For his services in the Middle East he was made an OBE. From 1948 to 1951 he was AAG at HQ Western Command at Chester before joining the War Office as AAG from 1951 to 1954. His next appointment was 0 i/c Records at Warwick. He retired from the Army on 19th October 1958 and was appointed to a Civil Service post (RO 1) as Inspector of Records at the War Office which job he retained until October 1971. In his younger days he was a fine athlete and a keen rugger player. December 1983. He was also a very talented impersonator.
