Commanding Officer - The East Surrey Regiment

Commanded 1/6^th Bn The East Surrey Regiment from March 1945 to August 1945.

Graham Culverhouse was born in December 1907 and educated at Victoria College, Jersey. He was commissioned in 6^th Bn The East Surrey Regiment in 1939 and on the doubling of the Territorial Army was posted to the 1/6^th Battalion. In 1940 he served with the Battalion in France as a company commander and as MTO.

He was wounded at Dunkirk and evacuated to England. In 1941 he rejoined the 1/6^th Battalion and later was seconded to the Canadian Forces as a Brigade Major. He was wounded again, this time at Southampton dealing with incendiary bombs.

After this he became second-in-command of the 70^th (YS) Battalion and then joined the 2^nd Battalion. In 1943-44 he attended the Staff College after which he was posted to Italy, where for a short time he was Brigade Major of 11^th Infantry Brigade in 78^th Division - the 1^st Battalion was in 11^th Brigade. He then served on the staff at HQ Eigth Army and later was appointed second-in-command of 1^st Bn The Buffs.

After a further period on the staff he rejoined the 1/6^th Battalion in March 1945 and commanded the Battalion until August 1945. He was granted an Extended Service Commission and appointed GSO I Basic OCTU at Aldershot. From 1946 to 1948 he served in West Africa and on return to UK joined a Training Battalion REME and in 1949 became DAAG Southern Command. In 1950 he was appointed DAMS in 1 Corps, BAOR and was made a MBE.

He retired from the Army in 1954.

He died August 8^th 1993
