Commanding Officer - The East Surrey Regiment
Commanded 1/6th Bn The East Surrey Regiment from April 1942 to April 1943 when he was killed in action in North Africa.
Hugh Alan Bruno was born on 4th September 1897 and was commissioned in The Hampshire Regiment in September 1917. He was awarded the MBE for his services in the 1914-18 War. In February 1925 he transferred to The King's Own Royal Regiment and served with the 1st Battalion. In 1931 he attended Staff College and after further service with the 1st Battalion he was appointed Brigade Major of 164th Infantry Brigade (TA) from 1935 to 1937. After other staff duties he was appointed to command 1/6th Bn The East Surrey Regiment in April 1942.
He took the Battalion to North Africa and was killed while gallantly leading an attack at Djebel Djaffa in April 1943.
He was Mentioned in Despatches for his services in Tunisia.
