Commanding Officer - The East Surrey Regiment

Lt Col K L S LawtonCommanded 10th Bn The East Surrey Regiment from April to May 1941 when he was admitted to hospital.

Keith Leslie Stein Lawton was born on 29th November 1898 and was educated at Harrow School. He was commissioned in The East Surrey Regiment in September 1917 and was posted to the 12th Battalion and was wounded in France in August 1918. In October 1921 he was appointed Transport Officer of the 2nd Battalion and served with that Battalion in England, Ireland, Jersey and Gibraltar until 1931.

He then joined the 1st Battalion in India and was appointed adjutant. In 1935 he was posted to the Depot and from 1937 to 1939 was seconded to the Colonial Office. He then rejoined the 1st Battalion and served with it in France when as 2 i/c in 1940 he was wounded and evacuated to England.

In 1941 he was appointed to command the 10th Battalion in April but after two months was admitted to hospital. Later he served on General Eisenhower's Staff in North Africa. He then formed the Inspectorate of Army Equipment and served with it in Italy until1947.

He retired from the Army on 28th June 1947.

He died on 9th June 1966.
