Lt Col M J Minogue DSO MC
Commanding Officer - The East Surrey Regiment
Commanded 2nd Bn The East Surrey Regiment from 8th April 1927 to 8th April 1931. Martin Joseph Minogue was born on 23rd February 1878. He enlisted in The South Lancashire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Volunteers) in 1898 and served five years in the Ranks. On 3rd September 1902 he was granted a commission in the field in The Manchester Regiment. For his service in the South African War he received the Queen's Medal with five clasps and the King's Medal with two clasps.
On 26th February 1908 he transferred to The East Surrey Regiment. From March 1907 to March 1912 he was adjutant of a Volunteer Battalion which became a Territorial Force Battalion in 1908. In 1914 he went to France with the 1st Battalion. He was wounded and awarded the Military Cross.
He returned to UK and was appointed adjutant of the 4th Battalion. At the end of 1916 he rejoined the 1st Battalion as second-in-command and from August 1917 commanded the Battalion in France and Italy until the end of the War.
He was awarded the DSO in 1918. He was Mentioned in Despatches three times. On 21st June 1919 Lt Col C C G Ashton OBE, lately Commanding Officer of the 2nd Battalion was appointed to command the 1st Battalion and Lt Col Minogue became second-in-command and served with the Battalion in North Russia. In 1920 he was appointed adjutant of the 2nd Battalion. In October 1926 he sailed to India to join the 1st Battalion.
He was appointed to command the 2nd Battalion from 8th April 1927 and embarked in May 1927 to join that Battalion, which he commanded until 8th April 1931. He retired from the Army on 8th October 1931

He died on 27th April 1956.
