Commanded 2nd Bn The East Surrey Regiment from December 1944 to April 1945.
Thomas Wolryche Guy Stansfeld was born on 28th October 1906 at Harrismith, Orange River Colony, the son of Brigadier General T W Stansfeld,CMG.,DSO., late 19th Foot. He was educated at the RMC Sandhurst and commissioned in The Green Howards in February 1926. He served in Shanghai in 1927. From 1934 to 1935 he was an Instructor at the Small Arms School, Hythe. In 1938-39 he served in Palestine and was Mentioned in Despatches for his services there. In 1940 he served in France and in Norway. In 1941 he commanded 7th Bn The Green Howards in the Western Desert after which he commanded 5th Bn The East Yorkshire Regiment in 1942-43 and was Commandant of 164 OCTU from 1943 to 1944. In 1942 he was Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the DSO. In 1944 he commanded 9th Bn The South Lancashire Regiment and then 2nd Bn The East Surrey Regiment from December 1944 to April 1945.
In 1945 and 1946 he was with the Military Mission in Ethiopia and from 1947 to 1948 was with a War Office Selection Board. He retired from the Army on 11th May 1948.
He died on 21st October 1987.
