Commanded 2/5th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from September 1939 to July 1942.
Alexander Frederick Farquhar Young, known as 'Alex', was born in 1903 and educated at Cheltenham College. He was commissioned in 5th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment in 1924 and on the doubling of the Territorial Army in 1939 was appointed to command the 2/5th Battalion.
He took the Battalion to France in 1940 and after its re-formation in England trained it until July 1942 when he left for another appointment.
He was made an OBE in 1942 Later he was appointed as a senior General Staff Officer at the Combined Training Centre for the Normandy Landings.
In civilian life he was Chairman and Managing Director of a company, started by his father after the 1914-18 War, which became one of the largest construction companies in UK and later named Redland PLC.
He died on 7th March 1989.
