General Sir Henry Warde GCB

General Sir Henry WardeBorn on the 7th January, 1766, Sir Henry commenced his Army career in the First Foot Guards, being appointed an Ensign in March 1783. A Captain by 1792, he landed in Holland in the following year and was wounded when storming the outworks at the siege of Valenciennes. On 1st January 1801 King George III conferred on him the brevet of Colonel and in 1804 he was appointed Brigadier General. Later, for services at the Battle of Corunna, he received the thanks of Parliament and a medal.

After service in India in 1809 he served in Mauritius in 1810, gaining further thanks from Parliament and eventually becoming Acting Governor and Commander of the Forces of that island.

He was appointed Colonel of the 68th Foot in January 1813 and advanced to the rank of Lieutenant General in June of the same year. In 1815 he was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath and was advanced to the dignity of Knight Grand Cross in September 1831.

On 13th April 1831 he was appointed Colonel of the 31st Regiment on transfer from the 68th. He died on 1st October 1834 at Alresford, Hampshire.
