He was born on 22nd April 1785. Ensign, 91st Foot, 28th April 1802; Lieutenant by purchase, 2nd Battalion 35th Foot, 4th September 1802; to Half Pay 35th Foot, by reduction, May 1803; exchanged to 42nd Foot, 28th June 1803; Captain, 15th September 1804; exchanged to 3rd Battalion 1st Foot Guards 1st December 1804; Captain and Lieutenant Colonel, 25th December 1813; Brevet Colonel 27th May 1825; Major, 1st Battalion 17th November 1825; Major-General, 10th January 1837; to Half Pay 10th January 1837; Colonel, 55th Foot 27th February 1846, to 2nd Queen’s 7th August 1846; Lieutenant General, 9th November 1846; died at Auchinroth Lodge, Morayshire, Scotland on 29th August 1853.
Served in Sicily in 1806 and 1807. In Sir John Moore’s Campaign in 1808 and 1809, including the battle of Corunna. In the Expedition to Walcheren 1809. Served in Spain from April 1811, and remained with the army until the end of the Peninsular War in 1814, and was present at the storming of Seville, passage of the Bidassoa, battle of the Nivelle, actions of 9th, 10th and 12th December 1813, in front of Bidart, passage of the Adour, blockade of Bayonne and repulse of the sortie; served also in the Campaign of 1815, including the battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo, and the storming of Peronne. In December 1841, he embarked in command of reinforcements for China, and commanded a brigade at the attack and capture of Chinkiang Foo (Medal). Received the War Medal with 3 Clasps for Corunna, Nive and Toulouse; also the Order of Maria Theresa from the Emperor of Austria, and the Orders of St. George, Anne and Vladimir, from the Emperor of Russia.
