He was born on 22^nd April 1785. Ensign, 91^st Foot, 28^th April 1802; Lieutenant by purchase, 2^nd Battalion 35^th Foot, 4^th September 1802; to Half Pay 35^th Foot, by reduction, May 1803; exchanged to 42^nd Foot, 28^th June 1803; Captain, 15^th September 1804; exchanged to 3^rd Battalion 1^st Foot Guards 1^st December 1804; Captain and Lieutenant Colonel, 25^th December 1813; Brevet Colonel 27^th May 1825; Major, 1^st Battalion 17^th November 1825; Major-General, 10^th January 1837; to Half Pay 10^th January 1837; Colonel, 55^th Foot 27^th February 1846, to 2^nd Queen’s 7^th August 1846; Lieutenant General, 9^th November 1846; died at Auchinroth Lodge, Morayshire, Scotland on 29^th August 1853.

Served in Sicily in 1806 and 1807. In Sir John Moore’s Campaign in 1808 and 1809, including the battle of Corunna. In the Expedition to Walcheren 1809. Served in Spain from April 1811, and remained with the army until the end of the Peninsular War in 1814, and was present at the storming of Seville, passage of the Bidassoa, battle of the Nivelle, actions of 9^th, 10^th and 12^th December 1813, in front of Bidart, passage of the Adour, blockade of Bayonne and repulse of the sortie; served also in the Campaign of 1815, including the battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo, and the storming of Peronne. In December 1841, he embarked in command of reinforcements for China, and commanded a brigade at the attack and capture of Chinkiang Foo (Medal). Received the War Medal with 3 Clasps for Corunna, Nive and Toulouse; also the Order of Maria Theresa from the Emperor of Austria, and the Orders of St. George, Anne and Vladimir, from the Emperor of Russia.
