Brigadier G R P RoupellCommanded 1st Bn The East Surrey Regiment from November 1935 to July 1939.

George Rowland Patrick Roupell was born on 7th April 1892 and educated at Repton and the RMC Sandhurst. He was commissioned in The East Surrey Regiment in March 1912 and joined the 1st Battalion in Ireland. He served with the Battalion in France in the 1914-18 War and was wounded. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicuous gallantry at Hill 60 in April 1915. By the end of the war he was commanding the Battalion. Between the wars he served in Gibraltar, The Depot, India and Sudan and attended the Staff College. He commanded the 1st Battalion from November 1935 to July 1939 when he was promoted and commanded the 36th Infantry Brigade of 12th Division. Later he commanded 105th Infantry Brigade. He retired from the Army on 20th February 1946. He was Colonel of The East Surrey Regiment from July 1954 to October 1959 when the Regiment was amalgamated with The Queen's Royal Regiment. He was made a CB in 1956.

He died on 4th March 1974.
