Commanding Officer - The East Surrey Regiment

Commanded 1^st Bn The East Surrey Regiment from 3^rd September 1939 to 23^rd May 1941 when he was promoted to command a Brigade.

Reginald Alfred Boxshall was born on 23^rd August ,1896 and was educated at Cheltenham and the RMC Sandhurst. He was commissioned in The East Surrey Regiment in March 1915 and joined the 2^nd Battalion in France in June 1915 with whom he served in France, Salonika and Turkey. He was appointed adjutant in 1918. For his services in the 1914-18 War he was Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the Order of Redeemer of Greece (5^th class). After the war he continued to serve with the 2^nd Battalion in UK, Turkey and Ireland. From 1927 to 1931 he was adjutant of 23^rd London Regiment and from 1931 to 1938 he was with the 1^st Battalion in India and Sudan except for the period October 1934 to December 1935 when he was employed as an adjutant in the Auxiliary Forces India. In November 1938 he was appointed to command the Depot and formed the ITC at Kingston. On the 3^rd September 1939 he was appointed to command the 1^st Battalion which he took to France in October and after heavy fighting in 1940 brought the Battalion back to England via Dunkirk. He was again Mentioned in Despatches for his fine leadership. In May 1941 he was promoted to command 206^th Infantry Brigade. From then until his retirement on 22^nd February 1949 he had a succession of Brigadier's commands.

He died on 11^th January 1984.
