Commanding Officer - The East Surrey Regiment

Commanded 1^st Bn The East Surrey Regiment from 24^th May 1941 to August 1941.

Arthur Charles Tarver Evanson ('Uncle’ to his friends) was born on 6^th April 1895 and educated at Haileybury College and the RMC Sandhurst. He was commissioned in The East Surrey Regiment in August 1914 and joined the 1^st Battalion in France in October 1914. After serving with the Battalion for a year he was seconded to The Machine Gun Corps with which he served in France, Belgium, Germany and India.

For his services in the 1914-18 War he was awarded the Military Cross and was Mentioned in Despatches. He rejoined the 1^st Battalion and served in Egypt and Sudan. In 1924 he became an Instructor at the Machine Gun School, Netheravon. He then served with the 1^st Battalion in India and the 2^nd Battalion in UK.

From 1935 to 1938 he commanded the Depot and rejoined the 2^nd Battalion in China early in 1939. In 1940 he returned to UK and after commanding the 1^st Battalion from May to August 1941 was promoted to command 198^th Infantry Brigade. After commanding two other Brigades he commanded North Midland District until he retired from the Army on 7^th March 1947. He was made a CB in 1947.

He died on 13^thFebruary 1957.
