Commanding Officer - The East Surrey Regiment

Lt Col J A Imison MCCommanded 5th Bn The East Surrey Regiment from 9th April 1938 to early 1940.

John Alwyn Imison was born in 1885. He was commissioned in 5th Bn The East Surrey Regiment in 1916 and served with the 5th Battalion until posted to 23rd London Regiment with whom he served in France and Belgium and was awarded the Military Cross.

He was wounded and after returning to UK served in 5th (Reserve) Battalion. In 1918 he joined the 1st Battalion in France and was awarded a bar to the Military Cross. In 1920 on the re-formation of the Territorial Army he joined the 5th Battalion and after serving successively as company commander and second-in-command was appointed to command the Battalion on 9th April 1938.

When the Battalion was converted in 1939 into 57th Anti Tank Regiment RA he continued in command but early in 1940 having passed the age for command was released from the Army. He then resumed his profession as a schoolmaster.

He died on l0th May 1948 aged 63.
