Francis Edward Buller Girlinq, known to his friends as 'John', was born on 22nd August 1897 and was educated at Haileybury and the RMC Sandhurst. He was commissioned in The Queen's Royal Regiment in August 1916. He served with the 10th (Service) Battalion in France, Belgium and Italy and was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in 1918.
After the 1914-18 War he served first with the 1st Battalion and then joined the 2nd Battalion in India in 1924. From 1925 to 1927 he was ADC to the Governor of United Provinces, India. In 1927 he rejoined the 2nd Battalion in Khartoum and returned to the UK with the Battalion of which he became adjutant.
He attended the Staff College, Camberley and after staff appointments rejoined the 2nd Battalion in Palestine in 1939. In February 1940 he was appointed to command the 2/7th Battalion and served with it in France and the UK until July 1941 when he was appointed AQMG Southern Command. Thereafter he served on the staff. In 1943 he was promoted Colonel on Movement Control and saw service in Italy and North Africa and was made an OBE.
