Brigadier Henry Wood DSO

Brigadier Henry WoodCommanded 1/5th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from March 1944 to July 1944.

Henry Wood was born on 26th March 1906 and educated at the RMC Sandhurst He was commissioned in The Queen's Royal Regiment in September 1925 and joined the 2nd Battalion in Khartoum. He was seconded to The Royal West African Frontier Force from September 1929 to April 1935 and rejoined the 2nd Battalion. He attended the Staff College.

In 1940, he was Mentioned in Despatches. In March 1944 he was appointed to command the 1/5th Battalion which he led in Normandy and through the intense fighting at Villers Bocage and Livry for which he was awarded the DSO. In July 1944 he was promoted to command 147th Infantry Brigade.

After the war he served as Deputy Commander British Military Mission Greece and then as Deputy Director of the Territorial Army before retiring on 4th November 1949. He was awarded the French Croix de Guerre.

He died on 7th April 1988
