Brigadier J B Ashworth CBE DSO

Commanded 1/5^th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from July 1944 to August 1944 when he was wounded.

John Blackwood Ashworth was born on 7^th December 1910. He was educated at the RMC Sandhurst and commissioned in The Royal Sussex Regiment in August 1930.

From January 1934 to January 1937 he was an adjutant and thereafter held many staff appointments. He attended the Staff College and the Joint Services Staff College. He served in Palestine in 1937 and 1938. Between 1938 and 1941 he was an instructor and from July 1943 to July 1944 was a Brigade Major. In July 1944 he was appointed to command 1/5^th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment in France but was wounded in August.

In October 1944 he was appointed GSO I at the War Office and then continued on the Staff. His appointments included being Commandant of the School of Chemical Warfare from November 1954 to January 1957. From February 1957 to May 1959, he commanded a Territorial Army Brigade and from June 1959 to June 1962 was D M T at the War Office. On December 28^th 1961, he was appointed ADC to The Queen.

He was Mentioned in Despatches in December 1940 and again in August 1944. He was awarded the DSO in December 1944 and later made a CBE. He retired from the Army on 15^th January 1965.

He was Colonel of The Royal Sussex Regiment from 1963 to 1966 and Deputy Colonel of The Queen's Regiment in 1967.
