Brigadier M ElringtonCommanded 1/5th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from September 1943 to January 1944.

Maxwell Elrington was born on 3rd February 1899 and was commissioned in The Border Regiment in September 1917. He served in France and Belgium from October 1917 to July 1918 and then as ADC to his Divisional Commander in Italy from July 1918 to February 1919. He was Mentioned in Despatches in 1919. He then served in India and Waziristan from 1921 to 1924. From November 1936 to November 1939 he was a Brigade Major in Palestine. He was Mentioned in Despatches in 1939 and awarded the DSO.

In September 1943 in North Africa he was appointed to command 1/5th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment and led it during its part in the Italian Campaign. After the return of the Battalion to England, he left in January 1944 for another appointment.

In April 1941 he was made an OBE and again Mentioned in Despatches in December 1941. In December 1943 he was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta 3rd Class.

Whilst commanding a Brigade in Germany in April 1945 he was killed by a mine.
