Brigadier MEM MacWilliam CBE DSO** MC TD
Commanded 2/7th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from January 1945 to March 1946.
Maurice Edgar Macgregor MacWilliam was born on 7th February 1920. He was educated at St. Paul's School and enrolled in The Artists' Rifles. He was commissioned in 2/7th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment in July 1939. He served with the 2/7th Battalion throughout the 1939-45 War and was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in France in 1940. In January 1944 he was awarded the DSO for his services in Italy. He commanded the Battalion for periods from September 1944 to January 1945 while Lt Col. Bayne’s was absent on account of wounds and permanently from 20th January 1945 until March 1946- when the Battalion was disbanded. He was awarded a bar to his DSO in April 1945 and a second bar in August 1945 in each case for his distinguished leadership in Italy.
After the war he was granted a Regular Army Commission in The Queen's Royal Regiment and held a number of staff appointments and in 1947-48 was an Instructor at the RMA Sandhurst.
In 1950 he attended the Staff College and from 1955 to 1958 was a member of the Directing Staff of that College. This was followed by various appointments. including Colonel G S Staff College, Camberley in 1963-64 and Colonel A/Q HQ Eastern District, Colchester in 1964-65 and Commander of 161st Infantry Brigadier (TA) from 1965 to 1967. He then attended the Imperial Defence College and from January 1968 to February 1970 was Commander Land Forces, Hong Kong. He was made a CBE in 1970 and retired from the Army in May of that year.
