Lt Col D C Baynes DSO MC TD
Commanded 2/7th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from September 1943 to January 1945.
David Christopher Baynes was born in 1912 and after having been a L/Cpl in The Artists' Rifles was commissioned in 2/7th Battalion The Queen's Royal Regiment in July 1939 and served with that Battalion in France in 1940 when he was awarded the Military Cross.
He served continuously with the Battalion and became 2 i/c towards the end of the North African Campaign and in late September 1943 was appointed to command the Battalion.
He was wounded in September 1944 but returned to command in October. He ceased to command in January 1945. For his fine leadership in Italy he was awarded the DSO and also Mentioned in Despatches.
He died on 12th April 1958.
