Lieutenant Colonel G S Grimston

Lieutenant Colonel G S GrimstonCommanded 1st Bn The Queen's Royal. Regiment from September 1944 to June 1945.

George Sylvester Grimston was born on 2nd April 1905 and was educated at Winchester College and the RMC Sandhurst.

He was commissioned in The Queen's Royal Regiment in January 1925 and served with the 2nd Battalion in India, Sudan and UK from January 1925 to January 1930.

After two years at the Depot he rejoined the 2nd Battalion from March 1932 to April 1934.

He then became an instructor at the RMC Sandhurst until August 1938 when he joined the ITC at Guildford until 1940.

After a short period in France in 1940 he returned to UK and was chief instructor at the Officer Cadet Training Unit at Heysham from February to December 1941. He then joined the 15th (HD) Battalion. On 30th September 1943 he joined the 1st Battalion in India as 2 i/c and took command until December 1943 when Lt Col H C Duncombe arrived.

In September 1944 he was appointed to command the Battalion. In June 1945 he was appointed a GSO I at GHQ Delhi. He was Mentioned in Despatches for his services in Arakan, Burma. After returning to the UK in 1946 he held staff appointments at HQ Northern Command (York) and HQ Southern Command (Salisbury) until he retired from the Army on 1st June 1950.

A keen sportsman he played cricket for his Battalion, Sussex and the Army. He also played hockey for his Battalion, Sussex, the Army and Combined Services. He was manager of the Great Britain Hockey Team for the Olympic Games in London in 1948. He was Secretary of Sussex County Cricket Club from June 1950 to December 1964.

He died on 18th September,1990.
