Lieutenant Colonel J R Terry

Commanded 1^st Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from June 1945 to November 1946 and the 5^th Battalion from March 1951 to March 1954.

John Rose Terry was born on 10^th June 1913 and was educated at Wellington College and the RMC Sandhurst. He was commissioned in The Queen's Royal Regiment in February 1933 and served with the 2^nd Battalion in UK in 1933 and 1934. From 1935 to 1938 he served with the 1^st Battalion in India.

From January 1939 he was seconded to The King's African Rifles and served with the 2^nd Battalion from 1939 to 1942 and took part in the Abyssinia Campaign. In 1943 he was posted to the 14^th Battalion as 2 i/c and in 1944 returned to the UK. In March 1945 he rejoined 1^st Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment at Shillong just before the start of its Burma operations in 1945. In April he was 2 i/c and in June 1945 was appointed to command the Battalion and led it for the remainder of the war and its stay in Bangkok. In November 1946 he left the Battalion to attend the Staff College, Camberley.

From 1948 to 1949 he was DAAG HQ Northern Command (York) and GSQ II at HQ S W District (Taunton) from 1950 to 1951. In March 1951 he was appointed to command the 5^th Battalion (TA) which he did until March 1954. He then was appointed GSO II at HO N F District Nigeria from 1954 to 1956.

He retired from the Army on 29^th July 1958.

He was Mentioned in Despatches for his services in Abyssinia in 1941.

He was a keen sportsman and played rugby and polo for 1 Queen's and rugby for 14 KAR in Tanganyika and for 7 Division in Bangkok.

He died on 29^th June 1988.
