Lieutenant Colonel H R D Hill MBE
Commanded 1st Bn The Queen’s Royal Regiment from November 1954 to November 1957
Henry Robert Dunlop Hill, known as "Bob", was born on 23rd AUGUST 1915 and was educated at Marlborough and the RMC Sandhurst.. He was commissioned in to The Queen's Royal Regiment in August 1935 and served with the 2nd Battalion in England and Palestine until 1940 when he joined the Staff of 16th Infantry Brigade. The Brigade was heavily involved in fighting in Egypt, Crete and Syria and for his services he was made an MBE in 1941.
He held staff appointments in Ceylon and later joined the staff of 6th Indian Division in Burma. In 1942 he became an Instructor at the Staff College, Camberley and thereafter alternated between Regimental and Staff service until January 1954 when he became 2 i/c of the 1st Battalion and assumed command in November. During his tour of command the Battalion was engaged in suppressing terrorist activities in Malaya. He was twice Mentioned in Despatches.
In April 1957 he brought the Battalion to Germany and after completing his tour held various staff appointments until retiring from the Army on 2nd November 1962. In the 1970’s he was chairman of the Regimental Association and helped to establish the Museum at Clandon and later became Chairman of the Museum Trustees. He died on 23rd October 1986.
