Major-General D L Lloyd Owen CB DSO OBE MC
Commanded 1st Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from November 1957 to October 1959.
David Lanyon Lloyd Owen was born on 10th October 1917 and educated at Winchester College and the RMC Sandhurst.
He was commissioned in The Queen's Royal Regiment in January 1938 and posted to the 2nd Battalion with which he served in Palestine and Egypt. From February to September 1941 he was an instructor at the Middle East OCTU. He then served with the Long Range Desert Croup and commanded that Unit from November 1943 to July 1945. He was awarded the Military Cross in 1942 and the DSO in 1945.
He then held various staff appointments including being Military Assistant to The Supreme Allied Commander in the Mediterranean from September 1945 to December 1946 and to the C I G S from May 1949 to September 1950.
He was Military Assistant to the High Commissioner in Malaya from 1952 to 1953. From 1953 to 1955 he was a member of the Directing Staff at the Staff College, Camberley.
After serving at The Depot he was appointed to command 1st Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from November 1957 to amalgamation with 1st Bn The East Surrey Regiment on 14th October 1959. From December 1959 to October 1961 he commanded Old College of the RMA Sandhurst.
From December 1962 he commanded 24th Infantry Brigade Group for two years and from 1966 to 1968 was GOC Cyprus District, and from 1968 to 1969 GOC Near Fast Land Forces. From 1969 to 1972 he was President of the Regular Army Commissions Board. He was Mentioned in Despatches in June 1945 and again in May 1953.
In June 1954 he was made an OBE and in 1971 a CB.
He wrote The Desert my Dwelling Place with the Long Range Desert Group in North Africa and Providence Their Guide.
He died April 5th 2001
