Lieutenant Colonel T V Close DSO
Commanded 2nd Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from April 1944 to December 1944.
Terence Vincent Close was born on 30th May 1912. He served in the ranks for 142 days. After attending The Artists' Rifles OCTU he was granted a Regular Army Emergency Commission in The Queen's Royal Regiment in January 1940 and joined the 2nd Battalion with whom he served until December 1944.
In Syria in 1941 while a Brigade Liaison Officer he was captured by the Vichy French and flown to Italy but was released after the armistice in Syria and rejoined the Battalion.
In December 1943 he became the 2 i/c of the Battalion. He commanded No. 22 Column (Chindits) in the operations behind the Japanese lines. In April 1944 he was appointed to command the Battalion and in December 1944 he was repatriated to the UK. He was awarded the DSO for his fine leadership.
From July 1945 he commanded the 13th (HD) Battalion until its disbandment later that year and in December 1945 was appointed to command the l/6th Battalion for its further operations overseas in Syria until June 1946.
On 7th December 1946 he was granted a Regular Army Commission in The Queen's Royal Regiment.
He attended the Canadian Staff College and on return from Canada early in 1949 was appointed GSO (T) at HQ Home Counties District.
In November 1949 he died suddenly at ShorncIiffe at the early age of 37.
