Major-General R K Ross CB DSO MC
Commanded 2nd Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from 1937 from April 1940.
Robert Knox Ross was born on 23rd August 1893 and educated at Cheltenham and the RMC Sandhurst. He was commissioned in The Queen's Royal Regiment in February 1913 and served with the 2nd Battalion in Bermuda and South Africa. During the 1914-18 War he served in France and Belgium until 1916 with the Battalion then he joined the staff and was Brigade Major of 27th Brigade. Later he went to Palestine as Brigade Major of 233rd Brigade. He was awarded the Military Cross in 1915 and the DSO in 1918.
From 1919 to 1922 he was adjutant of the 2nd Battalion and served at the Depot in 1923. He was then seconded to the Egyptian Army and Sudan Defence Force for the next nine years. In 1932 he returned to the 2nd Battalion and in 1934 was appointed to command the Depot. In 1937 he was appointed to command the 2nd Battalion which he took to Palestine.
In 1940 he was appointed to command the 160th Brigade in the 53rd Welsh Division. In 1942 he became GOC of that Division and led the Division in the D Day landing in Normandy in 1944 and the subsequent operations in France and Germany.
He was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honour and the Croix de Guerre in 1944 and was made a CB in 1945.
After the 1939-45 war he commanded the Aldershot and Hants District until he retired from the Army on 12th December 1946.
He died on 3rd November 1951.
