Lieutenant Colonel B C Haggard

Lt Col A J RenshawCommanded 2nd Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from April 1940 to June 1941.

Bevis Charles Haggard was born on 4th September 1895 and was commissioned in The Queen's Royal Regiment in June 1915 and served with the 7th Battalion in France and Belgium from July to December 1915, May to July 1916 and January 1917 to August 1918. He was wounded three times.

Between the wars he served with the 2nd Battalion in Waziristan and India and the 1st Battalion in China, Malta and India. In 1938 he was 2 i/c of the 2nd Battalion and went with it to Palestine.

In April 1940 he was appointed to command the Battalion and led it in the campaigns in Egypt and Syria.

On the 24th June 1941 during an attack on the Damascus - Beirut Road, after an exhausting day in intense heat, he suffered a severe heart attack and was evacuated to England where he died.
