The Orderly Room Sergeant
ORQMS E Camp, known in the Regiment as 'Harry', was the Orderly Room Sergeant of the 2nd Bn The East Surrey Regiment during the Malaya Campaign. Throughout the long years of captivity ORQMS Camp, at considerable personal risk, maintained meticulous records of all members of the Battalion in Japanese hands. Despite many searches, the Japanese never found his nominal roll. After the War this remarkable book was accepted by the Infantry Record Office as the official record of casualties, and by the Regimental Paymaster as the basis for pay and pension awards.
The record book is stilI in regular use by the Secretary of the Regimental Association.
ORQMS Camp was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his services in the Malaya Campaign.
