Lance Corporal George Henshaw GC
1st Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey)
Lance Corporal Henshaw was born on 14th May 1910 and died on 14th February 1972. He had some connections with the town of Eastbourne.
At the time of the Quetta earthquake in India (31st May/1st June 1936) the 1st Bn The Queen’s Royal Regiment, returning from night manoeuvres, were ordered to carry out rescue operations and Lance Corporal Henshaw was set to work in the wreckage of Quetta Grammar School.
He was prominent in his actions, which were in a most dangerous part of the building and he successfully dug under some wreckage to bring out an Indian child alive. He was awarded the Empire Gallantry Medal and, additionally, the Viceroy’s Certificate of Commendation for Gallantry.
